Ray Ma, also known as Master Ma, found inspiration for this brooch in Van Gogh's "The Starry Night". The brooch captures the essence of the painting with its depiction of shining stars seen through the transparent wings of a dragonfly. The use of diamonds to represent the stars and the vortex on the wings adds a dynamic and lively touch to the design.
The Starry Night brooch stands out for its unique properties and intricate making process. Each piece of titanium used in the brooch undergoes a meticulous process of shaping and coloring that lasts over five months. The process includes crafting, jade carving, polishing, and assembling, all done by hand. This ensures that each piece is unique in shape, with no two brooches being exactly alike.
The brooch, measuring about 114*11*13mm, is made of titanium, Hetian jade, yellow diamond, and diamond. Despite its intricate design, the brooch is lightweight due to the use of titanium. It can be hung on clothes, used as an accessory for high-grade dresses, placed on gloves, or even on the shoulders of dresses.
The project started in December 2017 and was completed in April 2018 in Shenzhen, China. Master Ma faced several challenges during the making of this brooch. Shaping and coloring the titanium required close attention, as any careless handling could damage it. Carving the jade was also a difficult task, as damaged jade pieces are unlikely to bond together properly again.
The Starry Night brooch is a testament to Master Ma's innovative artistic style and his commitment to showcasing how Chinese traditional carving jade can be fashionable. This design won the Silver A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design Award in 2019, a prestigious accolade awarded to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
